March 2000 All figures in text are in seasonally adjusted current dollars Summary
New orders for manufactured goods in March increased $8.3
billion or 2.2 percent to $383.2 billion, the Department of
Commerce, Bureau of the Census reported today. This follows a
slight February decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders
increased 1.9 percent. Year to date, new orders are 8.7 percent
above the same period a year ago; new orders for the first
quarter are 2.5 percent above fourth quarter 1999.
Shipments increased $6.2 billion or 1.7 percent to $377.1
billion, following a 0.1 percent February increase. This is the

New orders for manufactured durable goods in March increased
$7.3 billion or 3.5 percent to $217.6 billion, revised from the
previously published 2.6 percent increase. Electronic and other electrical equipment, led by electronic
components, had the largest increase, $4.2 billion or 10.2
percent to $45.2 billion. This is the eighth increase in the
last ten months and the largest since August 1997.
Transportation equipment increased $1.9 billion or 4.1 percent
to $48.5 billion. Instruments and related products increased
$0.8 billion or 5.3 percent to $15.3 billion. Industrial
machinery and equipment, down four of the last five months,
decreased $0.7 billion or 1.7 percent to $40.7 billion.
New orders for nondurable goods, up nine of the last eleven
months, increased $1.0 billion or 0.6 percent to $165.6 billion.
Petroleum and coal products and paper and allied products had
the largest increases. Shipments Shipments of durable goods in March increased $4.7 billion or
2.3 percent to $211.2 billion, revised from the previously
published 1.5 percent increase. This is the ninth increase in
the last eleven months. Transportation equipment, led
by motor vehicles and parts, had the largest increase, $1.7
billion or 3.7 percent to $48.6 billion. Electronic and other
electrical equipment increased $0.9 billion or 2.3 percent to
$38.9 billion. This is the fourth increase in the last five
months. Industrial machinery and equipment increased $0.8
billion or 1.9 percent to $40.9 billion. Instruments and
related products up seven of the last eight months, increased
$0.4 billion or 2.7 percent to $15.2 billion. Shipments of nondurable goods increased $1.6 billion or 1.0
percent to $165.9 billion. This is the tenth increase in the
last eleven months. Paper and allied products had the largest
increase, $0.4 billion or 3.1 percent to $14.8 billion. This is
the ninth increase in the last eleven months. Unfilled Orders Unfilled orders for durable goods in March increased $6.3
billion or 1.2 percent to $527.1 billion, revised from the
previously published 1.1 percent increase. This is the ninth
consecutive increase. Electronic and other electrical equipment
had the largest increase, $6.4 billion or 7.3 percent to $94.2
billion, mostly due to electronic components. This is the
fifteenth increase in the last sixteen months and the largest
since August 1997. Industrial machinery and equipment, down for
the first time since June 1999, decreased $0.3 billion or 0.3
percent to $83.8 billion. Inventories Inventories of durable goods in March decreased $0.2 billion or
0.1 percent to $298.3 billion. This is the first decrease since
August 1999. Industrial machinery and equipment had the largest decrease,
$0.2 billion or 0.3 percent to $60.7 billion. Transportation
equipment, up three consecutive months, increased $0.2 billion
or 0.2 percent to $70.0 billion. Inventories of nondurable goods, up nine consecutive months,
increased $0.4 billion or 0.2 percent to $177.9 billion. By stage of fabrication, March finished goods increased 0.4
percent in durables and decreased 0.4 percent in nondurables.
Work in process decreased 0.4 percent in durables and increased
1.0 percent in nondurables. Materials and supplies decreased

sign, for the months specified. The advance to final percent change differ-
ences for the durable goods industries are shown in the advance report for the
month.
(1)The current month revisions are the difference between the advance percent
change and the percent change as shown in this publication.
