ADVANCE REPORT ON DURABLE GOODS MANUFACTURERS' SHIPMENTS AND ORDERS
March 2000
(All figures in text below are in seasonally adjusted current dollars)
NEW ORDERS New orders for manufactured durable goods in March
increased $5.5 billion or 2.6 percent to $215.2 billion, the
Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census reported today.
This follows a 2.0 percent February decrease. Excluding
transportation, new orders increased 2.8 percent. Year-to-date,
new orders are 7.4 percent above the same period a year ago; new
orders for the first quarter are 2.2 percent above fourth
quarter 1999.
Electronic and other electrical equipment, led by electronic
components, had the largest increase, $4.0 billion or 9.7
percent to $44.8 billion. This is the eighth increase in the
last ten months. Transportation equipment increased $0.8
billion or 1.8 percent to $47.3 billion; an increase in
motor vehicles and parts more than offset a decrease in
shipbuilding and tanks. Primary metals increased $0.1 billion or
0.5 percent to $15.9 billion. Industrial machinery and
equipment, down four of the last five months, decreased $0.9
billion or 2.1 percent to $40.4 billion.
SHIPMENTS Shipments of durable goods in March increased $3.2
billion or 1.5 percent to $209.7 billion, following a 1.4
percent February decrease. This is the ninth increase in the
last eleven months. Year-to-date, shipments are 6.6 percent
above the same period a year ago; shipments for the first
quarter are 2.0 percent above fourth quarter 1999.
Transportation equipment had the largest increase, $0.9 billion
or 2.0 percent to $47.8 billion; an increase in motor vehicles
and parts more than offset a decrease in aircraft and parts.
Electronic and other electrical equipment increased $0.7 billion
or 1.8 percent to $38.6 billion. This is the fourth increase in
the last five months. Industrial machinery and equipment
increased $0.7 billion or 1.7 percent to $40.9 billion. Primary
metals, up nine of the last eleven months, increased $0.1
billion or 0.6 percent to $16.1 billion.
UNFILLED ORDERS Unfilled orders for durable goods in March
increased $5.6 billion or 1.1 percent to $526.0 billion,
following a 0.6 percent February increase. This is the ninth
consecutive increase. Electronic and other electrical equipment
had the largest increase, $6.2 billion or 7.1 percent to $94.0
billion, mostly due to electronic components. This is the
fifteenth increase in the last sixteen months and the largest
since August 1997. Industrial machinery and equipment, down for
the first time since June 1999, decreased $0.5 billion or 0.6
percent to $83.5 billion. Transportation equipment, down
nineteen of the last twenty-three months, decreased $0.5 billion
or 0.2 percent to $229.3 billion, mostly due to railroad
equipment. Primary metals, down five consecutive months,
decreased $0.2 billion or 0.5 percent to $31.6 billion.
CAPITAL GOODS INDUSTRIES, DEFENSE New orders in March decreased
$2.0 billion or 30.6 percent to $4.5 billion. Shipments, down
four consecutive months, decreased $0.1 billion or 1.2 percent
to $5.9 billion. Unfilled orders, down for the first time since
November 1999, decreased $1.4 billion or 1.5 percent to $93.5
billion.
CAPITAL GOODS INDUSTRIES, NONDEFENSE New orders in March
increased $1.2 billion or 2.0 percent to $58.6 billion.

or 2.9 percent to $51.5 billion; and unfilled orders, down for
the first time since August 1999, decreased $0.3 billion or 0.3
percent to $119.1 billion.
REVISED FEBRUARY DATA Revised seasonally adjusted February
