GATEWAY
(GTW, 62.88)- The PC maker beat estimates by a penny, earning 56 cents
a share in its second quarter. Revenues rose 18% in the quarter and
shipments rose 36%. The company's non PC business accounted for over
10% of income.
GENERAL INSTRUMENT (GIC, 41.94)-
The maker of set-top boxes earned 24 cents a share in its second quarter,
beating estimates by 2 cents. Revenues in the quarter grew to $527
million from last year's $489 million, and backlog was $674 million,
compared to $595 million last year.
NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS (NATI, 47.25)-
The company announced a 3 for 2 stock split.
PILGRIM CAPITAL (PFX, 29.94)- The
fund manager has agreed to be acquired by ReliaStar Financial (RLR, 47.5)
for $258 million. Pilgrim shareholders will receive 0.5 shares of
ReliaStar plus $12.50 in cash for each Pilgrim share.
REDBACK NETWORKS (RBAK, 148)- The
company announced a 2 for 1 stock split.
SUN MICROSYSTEMS (SUNW, 67.19)-
The computer maker beat fourth quarter estimates by 2 cents, earning 48
cents a share, an increase of 37% from last year. Revenues rose 22%
to $3.51 billion.
VERIO INC (VRIO, 79)- The company
announced a 2 for 1 stock split.
VERTICALNET (VERT, 96.38)- The
company announced a 2 for 1 stock split.

TELECOMMUNICATIONS (ADCT, 43.25)- The company will join the S&P
500 after the close on July 30th.
ALLIED WASTE INDUSTRIES (AW, 18.94)-
The trash hauler will be added to the S&P 500 after the close on July
30th.
AMAZON.COM (AMZN, 125.43)- The
online retailer met estimates with a loss of 51 cents a share in its
second quarter, compared to last year's 12 cent loss. Revenues rose
171% to $314.4 million in the quarter, at the top end of estimates.
The company expects third quarter sequential revenue growth to top the
second quarter's 7% growth rate, but expects to increase its spending in
the second half and into next year. The shares fell 3 1/2 in after
hours trading despite the company's announcement of a 2 for 1 stock split.
AMERICA ONLINE (AOL, 115.06)- The
S&P 500 component beat fourth quarter estimates by 2 cents and met its
whisper number, earning 13 cents a share. Revenues rose 46% to $1.38
billion in the quarter, and advertising and e-commerce revenues jumped 87%
to $306 million. Membership gre by 755,000 in the fourth quarter,
slightly below expectations.
CENDANT CORP (CD, 21.19)- The
direct marketing company beat second quarter estimates by 2 cents, earning
24 cents a share. Revenues rose 8% to $1.38 billion in the quarter.
LEGATO SYSTEMS (LGTO, 74.56)- The
company reported a 222% jump in second quarter profits to 29 cents a
share, beating estimates by 3 cents. Revenues rose 65% to $62
million in the quarter. The company also announced a 2 for 1 stock
split.
PHILIPS ELECTRONICS (PHG, 103.63)-
Shares of the Dutch electronics company are down 5% in European trading
after it reported a 9% drop in second quarter profits.
SILICON GRAPHICS (SGI, 16)- The
computer maker surprised with a fourth quarter return to profitability.
SGI posted a profit of 12 cents a share, analysts were looking for a loss
of 4 cents. Revenues rose to $662 million in the quarter, from last year's
$619 million.

AMRESCO
(AMMB, 5.75)- The financial services company missed estimates by 9
cents, earning 20 cents a share in its second quarter. The company
also said that it is in talks to be acquired.
CENTOCOR (CNTO, 49.5)- The stock
is up 4 1/2 in European trading after the Wall Street Journal reported
that Johnson & Johnson is prepared to buy the biotech for $4.9
billion.
CHASE MANHATTAN (CMB, 80.88)- The
banking giant reported second quarter earnings of $1.55 a share, beating
estimates by 19 cents. Operating revenues jumped 13% to $5.7
billion. The stock is up 5/8 in Europe on the better than expected
results.
CLOROX CO (CLX, 110.25)- The
bleach maker announced a 2 for 1 stock split.
MP3.COM INC (MPPP, -)- The music
websites shares were priced at $28 last night. Trading begins today.
RF MICRO DEVICES (RFMD, 72.38)-
The wireless component maker beat estimates by 3 cents, earning 25 cents a
share in its fiscal first quarter. Revenues rose 165% to $62 million
in the quarter. The company also announced that it will split its
stock 2 for 1.

CBRL
GROUP (CBRL, 18.13)- The restaurant operator warned that fourth
quarter and full year earnings will be below expectations. The
company sees $0.21-$0.25 in the quarter and $1.16-$1.20 for the year,
compared to analysts expectations of $0.37 in the quarter and $1.32
for the full year. The company cited lower than expected same store
sales, margin pressures, and higher S, G, & A expenses for the profit
shortfall.
CORNING INC (GLW, 71.63)- The
company earned 49 cents a share in its second quarter, an increase of 26%,
beating estimates by 3 cents. Revenues rose 19% to $1.02 billion in the
quarter.
HELIX TECHNOLOGY (HELX, 28.06)-
The company beat estimates by 3 cents, earning 13 cents a share in its
second quarter. Revenues rose to $32.5 million from $25.7 million in
last year's second quarter.
IBM (IBM, 134.63)- The computer
maker beat estimates by 3 cents a share, but missed its whisper number by
a penny, earning 91 cents in its second quarter. Revenues in the
quarter increased to $21.9 billion from $18.8 billion. The shares
rose 1 1/4 in after hours trading on the news.
KEMET CORP (KMET, 23.75)- The
maker of ceramic capacitors beat estimates by 3 cents, earning 12 cents a
share in its second quarter, an increase of 214%. Revenues rose 18%
to $134.2 million.
MICROSOFT (MSFT, 98.38)- The
software maker reported a 62% jump in fourth quarter profits to 40 cents a
share, beating estimates by 4 cents and the whisper number by 2 cents.
Revenue increased 39% to $5.76 billion in the quarter. The shares
fell 3/4 in after hours trading after the company warned that fiscal 2000
revenue growth would slow due to Y2K uncertainty, "slowing PC
demand", and "uncertain global economic conditions".
QUALCOMM (QCOM, 158.69)- The
cellular technology company beat estimates by 12 cents, earning 75 cents a
share in its third quarter. Revenues increased 15% to $1 billion in
the quarter.
ZOMAX (ZOMX, 48.38)- The company
beat estimates by 5 cents, earning 60 cents a share in its second quarter.
Revenues rose 279% to $55.1 million. The company also announced a 2
for 1 stock split.

AQUITAINE (ELF, 90.63)- The French oil company has made a 50.3 billion
euro counter bid for Total Fina (TOT, 66.81). Earlier this month
Total Fina made a hostile $48 billion offer for ELF.
LOCKHEED MARTIN (LMT, 38.88)- The
defense contractor has won a $2.5 billion contract from the Israeli
government to build F-16 fighter planes.
METATEC INTERNATIONAL (META,
5.38)- The optical disc manufacturer warned that second quarter sales and
earnings will be below expectations. The company expects to lose 8
to 12 cents a share in the quarter.
PULITZER INC (PTZ, 46.94)- The
newspaper publisher earned 48 cents a share in its second quarter, beating
estimates by 2 cents. Revenues rose 4.8% to $98.7 million.
US WEST (USW, 60.25)- The bidding
war between Global Crossing and Qwest Communications for US West and
Frontier Corp. has ended. US West has accepted a $36 billion merger offer
from Qwest Communications. Frontier Corp. meanwhile has accepted an
$11 billion merger bid from Global Crossing.
