ALLMERICA
FINANCIAL (AFC, 61.19)- The insurer beat estimates by 16 cents as
earnings rose 45.1% to $1.32 a share in its second quarter.
BMC SOFTWARE (BMCS, 48.38)- The
software maker beat estimates by 2 cents, earning 42 cents a share in its
second quarter. Revenues jumped 43% to $400.7 million in the
quarter, with license revenues rising 47% and mainframe revenues
increasing by 42%.
CIENA CORP (CIEN, 34.31)- The
company will join the NASDAQ 100 on August 4th.
ELECTRONIC DATA SYSTEMS (EDS, 62.13)-
The computer services company earned 44 cents a share in its second
quarter, an increase of 13%, and a penny above expectations.
Revenues rose 10% to $4.6 billion in the quarter. The company
expects full year revenue growth to be 10%.
LAM RESEARCH (LRCX, 46.38)- The
semiconductor equipment company reported fourth quarter earnings of 28
cents a share, beating estimates of a 12 cent profit. Revenues rose
38% sequentially to $210.9 million. The company said its book to
bill ratio rose to 1.2 to 1 in the quarter. Gross margins improved
to 38.8% from last year's 35.5%.
NET OBJECTS (NETO, 7.06)- The
maker of web design software reported a wider than expected third quarter
loss of 30 cents a share. Analysts were looking for a loss of 22
cents. Revenues rose to $5.2 million from $4.8 million.
NOODLE KIDOODLE (NKID, 6.31)- The
retailer warned that it will lose $0.28-$0.30 in its second quarter.
Analysts were looking for a loss of $0.15 a share. The company
blamed the shortfall on startup costs associated with a new Internet joint
venture, and a "scarcity of Beanie Babies merchandise".
NORTEL NETWORKS (NT, 88.31)- The
company announced a 2 for 1 stock split.
OCTEL CORP (OTL, 12.31)- The
chemical maker beat estimates by 5 cents, earning 86 cents a share in its
second quarter.

JEEVES (ASKJ, 44.06)- The internet company reported a narrower than
expected second quarter loss of 42 cents a share, analysts were looking
for a loss of 44 cents.
BRITISH TELECOM (BTY, 184.63)-
The telecom disappointed with a less than expected 9% rise in first
quarter profits to �536 million. The shares are
down 4.4% in London trading after the company announced plans to step up
spending on ADSL technology.
COMPAQ COMPUTER (CPQ,
25.94)- The PC maker beat expectations by a penny, losing 10 cents a
share in its second quarter. The company announced that it would cut
6,000-8,000 jobs as part of a $700-$900 million restructuring plan.
Gross margin fell to 20.5% from 24.7% in the first quarter
DEUTSCHE TELECOM (DT, 41
)- The German telecom reported a 4.4% drop in first half profits and a
5% decline in revenues as lower tariffs took their toll on the
company. Analysts were looking for a 3.8% rise in profits.
GLAXO WELLCOME (GLX,
55.31)- The drugmaker reported a 8.4% rise in first half profits to
25.6 pence a share, beating analysts expectations, but warned that full
year profit and revenue growth will fall short of its 10% plus targets.
The company cited increased competition for two of its drugs and slower
sales of its AIDS drug for the lowered expectations. The shares are
down 148 pence, or 8.3% on the LSE. The news could put pressure on
the shares of other drug stocks when N.Y. trading begins.
SAWTEK INC (SAWS, 65.63)-
The company announced a 2 for 1 stock split.
TIMBERLAND (TBL, 83.5)-
The footwear maker said it will split its shares 2 for 1.

EGGHEAD.COM
(EGGS, 9.23)- The online computer hardware and software retailer
reported a narrower than expected first quarter loss of 34 cents a share,
compared to analysts' expectations of a 38 cent loss. Revenues rose
37% to $40.6 million in the quarter.
FOSTER WHEELER (FWC, 13.88)- The
construction company reported second quarter earnings of 13 cents a share,
compared to expectations of a 32 cent profit. Revenues fell to $874
million from $1.05 billion, and unfilled orders slumped to $6.99 billion
from $7.96 billion. The company also announced a cut in its
quarterly dividend to 6 cents a share, a broad based restructuring,
and an agreement with bondholders to exit from the operation of its
Robbins Resource Recovery Facility.
IMMUNEX (IMNX, 117.13)- The
biotech announced a 2 for 1 stock split.
MYLAN LABORATORIES (MYL, 26.88)-
The drug manufacturer warned that lower than expected revenues and higher
costs will cause first quarter earnings to fall short of analysts' expectations
of 33 cents a share.
MYLEX CORP (MYLX, 10.25)- IBM
will acquire the maker of RAID adapters for $12 a share in a $240 million
deal.
NORTEL NETWORKS (NT, 84.63)- The
telecom equipment maker beat estimates by 5 cents, earning 55 cents a
share in its second quarter. Revenues jumped 30% to $5.41 billion.
REVLON INC (REV, 22.25)- The
cosmetics giant earned 11 cents a share excluding charges in its second
quarter, compared to analysts expectations of a 32 cent profit.
Sales fell to $553.4 million from last year's $575.3 million. the
company cited competition in the U.S., economic uncertainty, and currency
fluctuations for the weaker than expected results. Revlon said that
increased promotional spending in the second half will cause full year
operating earnings to fall short of current estimates.
THESTREET.COM (TSCM, 31.75)- The
Internet financial news web site reported a narrower than expected loss of
30 cents a share excluding charges in its second quarter. Analysts
were looking for a 37 cent loss. Revenues in the quarter rose to $3.3
million.
UNION PACIFIC RESOURCES (UPR, 16.06)-
The oil and gas exploration company beat expectations, earning 6 cents a
share in its second quarter, compared to estimates of a loss of 6
cents.

ARMSTRONG
WORLD INDUSTRIES (ACK, 54.19)- The floor coverings maker beat
estimates by 6 cents, earning $1.62 a share in its second quarter,
compared to last year's $1.38.
BENCKISER N.V. (BNV, 55.88)- The
company has agreed to be bought by the U.K.'s Reckitt & Colman Plc.
Benckiser shareholders will receive 5 shares of Reckitt & Colman for
each BNV share held. The new company will be called Reckitt
Benckiser and will be the world's largest maker of household cleaning
products.
COX COMMUNICATIONS (COX, 38.81)-
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the company plans to buy
Gannett's cable TV assets for $2.7 billion.
EBAY INC (EBAY, 104.38)- The
auctioneer beat estimates by a penny, earning 4 cents a share in its
second quarter, a 20% decrease from last year's 5 cents. Revenues
rose 154% to $19.5 million in the quarter. The company said
registered users grew 46% sequentially to 5.6 million. Gross margins fell
to 78% from 83%. After an initial 5 1/2 point gain on the news in
after hours trading, the shares reversed and fell to 99 3/4.
GUESS? (GES, 14.94)- The apparel
maker earned 16 cents a share in its second quarter, 4 cents ahead of
analysts' estimates. Revenues in the quarter rose 21.9% to $119.6
million. Same store sales rose 30.9% in the quarter.
JDS UNIPHASE (JDSU, 158.13)- The fiberoptic
component maker reported fourth quarter earnings of 48 cents a share,
beating estimates by 7 cents.
MACROVISION (MVSN, 76.06)- The
company beat estimates by 2 cents, earning 23 cents a share in its second
quarter. Revenues rose 42% to $8.1 million in the quarter. The
company also announced a 2 for 1 stock split.
WATERS CORP (WAT, 53.13)- The
analytical instruments maker beat second quarter estimates by 5 cents,
earning 43 cents a share, a 43% increase from the prior year's
quarter. Revenues in the quarter rose 15% to $172.3 million.

(ALL, 34)- The insurer received a favorable mention in this weekend's
Barron's, with a 12-18 month price target of $60.
DISNEY, WALT (DIS, 26.81)- The company received a favorable mention
in this weekend's Barron's, with a 12 month target of $43.
HOST MARRIOTT SERVICES (HMS, 9.75)- The company beat estimates by 5
cents, earning 19 cents a share in its second quarter. Revenues
increased 8% to $350 million in the quarter. MONDAY: The company
has agreed to be acquired by Italy's Autogrill for $15.75 per share in
cash.
ROBERTS PHARMACEUTICALS (RPC, 25)-
The drug maker will merge with the U.K.'s Shire Pharmaceuticals Group Plc
in a $1 billion merger that values each RPC share at approximately U.S.
$30.71.
SEACOR SMIT (CKH, 53.75)- The company earned 51 cents a share in
its second quarter, compared to analysts' expectations of 82 cents.
Revenues in the quarter fell to $68.5 million from $95.7 million last
year.
UNISTAR FINANCIAL SERVICES (UAI, 27.63)- The company has cancelled
a planned 2 for 1 stock split after the American Stock exchange suspended
trading in its shares pending a review.
VALLEN CORP (VALN, 15.38)- The company reported earnings of 20
cents a share, excluding charges, in its fourth quarter.
