CHARTER ONE FINANCIAL
(CF, 23.50)- The bank holding company will be added to the S&P 500
Index after the close of trading today.
ETHYL CORPORATION (EY, 2.81)- The
chemicals maker warned that second quarter and full year earnings will
fall short of expectations due to higher raw materials prices and the
weakness of the euro against the dollar. The company now sees second
quarter earnings in the "mid single digit range". Analysts
were looking for the company to earn 14 cents in the second quarter and 52
cents for the full year.
JABIL CIRCUIT INC (JBL, 45.75)- The
provider of outsourced electronics manufacturing services beat estimates
by a penny as third quarter earnings rose 50% to 21 cents per share.
Revenues increased 66%, and 15% sequentially, to $965.8 million in the
quarter.
J.M. SMUCKER CO (SJM.a, 17.68)-
The maker of fruit spreads and peanut butter said fourth quarter earnings
fell to 26 cents per share from last year's 34 cents. Revenues in
the quarter were flat at $156.6 million. The company attributed the
profit drop to higher fruit prices and higher distribution costs.
METLIFE INC (MET, 20)- The
insurer has agreed to sell its 48% stake in asset management company Nvest
to CDC Asset Management for $40 per unit in a deal valued at $858 million.
RED HAT INC (RHAT, 23.38)- The
Linux software maker beat estimates by two cents as its first quarter loss
narrowed to two cents per share from last year's loss of eight
cents. Revenues increased 95%, and 22% sequentially, to $16 million
in the quarter. Gross margins improved to 54% from 47.4% in the
fourth quarter.
REMEDYTEMP INC (REMX, 15.38)- The
provider of temporary staffing services warned that second quarter
earnings will fall short of analysts' current expectations of 50 cents per
share. The company attributed the shortfall to lower than expected
sales growth.
UNIONBANCAL CORP (UB, 28.68)- The
bank holding company warned that second quarter earnings will fall short
of expectations. The company now sees earnings of $0.77-$0.82 per
share in the quarter. Analysts were looking for the company to earn
88 cents. The company sees non performing loans rising to 0.75% of
total loans, compared to 0.56% at the end of the first quarter.
US OFFICE PRODUCTS CO (OFIS, 0.81)- The
provider of office supplies said its fourth quarter loss widened to $3.30
per share from last year's loss of $2.66. Revenues fell 7.9% to
$606.9 million in the quarter.

AVT CORP (AVTC, 7)- The maker of
communications software warned that second quarter earnings will fall
short of expectations. The company now sees revenues of $24-$27
million and earnings of $0.05-$0.09. Analysts were looking for the
company to earn 11 cents. The company attributed the shortfall to a
slump in the business telephone equipment industry, the loss of a major
customer, and "sales force attrition".
CDNOW INC (CDNW, 4.28)- The music
retailer said it is continuing its search for a merger partner. The
company said any bid for the company "may be below the current market
price" of its shares.
IDT CORP (IDTC, 28.19)- The
provider of telecommunications services missed estimates by 20 cents as it
reported a third quarter loss of 12 cents per share, excluding gains,
compared to last year's profit of seven cents. Third quarter
revenues increased 40%, but fell 5.7% sequentially from the second
quarter, to $256.1 million.

CMGI INC (CMGI, 56.63)- The
Internet holding company beat estimates by seven cents as its third
quarter loss widened to $1.53 per share ($428 million) from last year's
loss of 15 cents. Revenues increased 417%, and 47% sequentially, to
$225.9 million in the quarter. The company's Internet businesses
reported revenues of $182.8 million and an operating loss of $718.3
million. The shares rose 3.87 in after hours trading on the news.
EBAY INC (EBAY, 68)- The online
auctioneer has agreed to acquire Half.com for 4.6-5.5 million shares in an
all-stock deal valued at $312-$374 million. eBay expects the deal to
be accretive to 2001 earnings. The shares rose 0.88 in after hours
trading on the news.
MACDERMID INC (MRD, 19.56)- The
graphics company has acquired wide format printer maker ColorSpan in a $50
million deal. The company said the deal will be accretive to current
earnings.
MARTEK BIOSCIENCES (MATK, 17.75)-
The biotech missed estimates by three cents as it reported a second
quarter loss of 24 cents per share, flat with the prior year.
Revenues increased 58% to $2.37 million.
NETWORK APPLIANCE (NTAP, 86.06)-
The networking company has agreed to acquire network software maker Orca
Systems Inc in a $71 million cash and stock deal. The company
expects to take a charge of $0.03 in the current quarter as a result of
the deal. The shares rose 0.94 in after hours trading on the news.
PATTERSON DENTAL CO (PDCO, 53.43)-
The dental products distributor announced a 2 for 1 stock split. The
shares rose 0.57 in after hours trading on the news.
TODD SHIPYARDS CORP (TOD, 8)- The
shipbuilder reported fourth quarter earnings of 12 cents per share,
compared to last year's $1.92. Revenues fell 21% to $36.1 million in
the quarter.
VTEL CORP (VTEL, 4.13)- The maker
of videoconferencing systems missed estimates by 17 cents as its third
quarter loss widened to 33 cents per share, excluding one-time gains, from
last year's loss of two cents. Revenues in the quarter slumped to
$31.1 million from last year's $36.1 million. The shares fell 0.13
in after hours trading on the news.
XIRCOM INC (XIRC, 46)- The
company has agreed to acquire Omnipoint Technologies for 1.2 million XIRC
shares in a $52.2 million deal. The shares rose 0.50 in after hours
trading on the news.

BOISE CASCADE CORP (BCC, 26.31)- The
paper maker and office products distributor warned that second quarter
earnings will fall short of expectations. The company now sees
earnings below last year's 52 cents. Analysts were looking for
the company to earn 71 cents. The company attributed the shortfall
to slowdowns in its building products and office products distribution
businesses.
GREAT LAKES AVIATION (GLUX, 2)- The
airline said its May load factor rose to 49.3% from last year's 48.1%.
THE RIGHT START INC (RTST, 5.43)- The
retailer of child development products said its first quarter loss widened
to 86 cents per share from last year's loss of one cent. Revenues
increased 38.1% to $15.3 million in the quarter, but same store sales fell
1.7%.
SAFETY-KLEEN CORP (SK, 0.63)- The
industrial waste management company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy
protection.
SOLUTIA INC (SOI, 12.88)- The
specialty chemical product maker warned that second quarter earnings will
fall short of expectations. The company now sees earnings per share
"in the low 30's", excluding a $30 million charge.
Analysts were looking for the company to earn 47 cents. The company
attributed the shortfall to a weak euro and rising raw materials costs.
