ALBANY INT'L (AIN,
22.25)- The company earned 38 cents a share inits
first quarter, beating estimates by 4 cents. Revenues increased 3.1% but gross
margins declined from 42.5% to 41.3% due to pricing pressures. AMERICAN POWER CONVERSION (APCC, 29.19)- The PC power surge protection company beat estimates by 4 cents a share
in its first quarter. Revenues rose 27% in the quarter, with the highest increases
in Asia and Europe. The company also said it expects to meet full year expectations.
The shares, which are down from a 52 week high of 55.5, should get a boost from the
news.
BROADVISION (BVSN, 60.5)- The Internet software company beat first quarter estimates by 2 cents a
share. Revenues rose 83% over last year's first quarter and 15% sequentially.
The shares rose 16.4% in yesterday's trading and should get a lift from the better than
expected results.
COX COMMUnICATIONS (COX, 72.5)- The cable TV company will acquire Media General's cable operations in an
agreed $1.4 billion deal.
DOLLAR TREE STORES (DLTR, 38.94)- The discount retailer beat first quarter earnings expectations by 2
cents a share. Revenues jumped from $175.5 million to $221.2 million in the quarter,
helped by a rise in same store sales which increased 5.4%.
GATEWAY (GTW, 69.94)- The PC maker earned 62 cents in its first quarter, topping estimates by
2 cents a share. Profit margins jumped to 21.4% from 19.5% in the quarter. The
company remains optimistic about the future and sees no signs of a slowdown in the PC
business. The news will help to further ease worries about an industry wide slowdown
and will give a lift to the other box makers in today's trading.
KSWISS (KSWS, 37.38)- The shoe maker beat first quarter estimates of 75 cents by 40 cents a
share, earning $1.15 in the quarter. Revenues increased 110% in the quarter and
futures orders jumped 130%. The shares closed at a 52 week high yesterday and will
likely be strong in today's trading.
MAXTOR (MXTR, 7.56)- The disk drive maker met expectations of a 17 cent a share profit in its
first quarter as revenues rose 24%. The company warned that intensifying pricing
pressure would sharply curtail second quarter results but that it would remain profitable
in the quarter.
MEDIAONE GROUP (UMG, 69.5)- ATT made a surprise $62 billion bid for the cable operator who has
already agreed to a $48 billion merger with Comcast. ATT said the cost of the deal
would lower its profits by 30 cents a share during the first year following the merger.
MediaOne jumped $12 in after hours trading on the news, and Comcast moved up $3
1/2. Look for the bid to give a boost to other CATV and media stocks in today's
trading.
SCOTTS (SMG, 41.38)- The leading maker of lawn care products reported a 65% increase in
profits as revenues rose 47% in the quarter. The company earned $1.81 a share,
beating estimates of $1.58.
SILICON GRAPHICS (SGI, 12.19)- The graphics workstation maker reported a narrower than expected loss of
21 cents a share in its third quarter, compared to estimates of a 30 cent a share loss.
Revenues declined to $619 million from $708 million in the prior year's quarter. |

ADAC LABORATORIES
(ADAC, 12.56)- The medical equipment maker warned
that weaker demand for nuclear imaging products will result in second quarter revenues
coming in 2%-8% below current estimates. The company expects to report a large
decrease in earnings, and said the slowdown will continue in the third and fourth
quarters. The shares are down from 31 5/8, and will come under additional pressure
today. ALTERA (ALTR, 78.25)- The chip maker announced a 2 for 1 stock split and will rally on the
news today.
ALZA (AZA, 34.31)- The company missed first quarter estimates by 4 cents a share, earning
$0.28 in the quarter as net revenues jumped 44%. Gross margins increased to 64% from
53%.
CNET (CNET, 119.75)- The Internet company beat first quarter earnings by 6 cents a share and
announced a 2 for 1 stock split. The combination of better than expected earnings
and a stock split should send these shares soaring today.
GO2NET (GNET,177.5)- The Internet company beat second quarter estimates by 5 cents a share,
earning 7 cents in the quarter. The company also annouced a 2 for 1 stock split.
GO2NET and CNET will lead the Internet stocks higher today.
IBM (IBM)-Big Blue's first quarter earnings soared 42% in the quarter on strong
gains in it service business. The shares soared 10 on the news in after hoirs
trading.
REEBOK INT'L (RBK, 1938)- The athletic shoe maker said lower demand caused reveues to fall 12% in
the quarter. |

AMGEN (AMGN, 69)- The biotech company beat first quarter estimates by 2 cents a share as
earnings rose 31% to $0.46. Revenues rose 21% in the quarter. Analysts were
disappointed by the company's future growth forecasts, and the shares fell 5 in after
hours trading. ASPECT DEVELOPMENT
(ASDV, 7.5)- The software maker reported a narrower
than expected loss of 6 cents a share. Analysts were looking for a loss of 26 cents
a share in the first quarter. The company also said that it expects to report a full
year profit. The shares are down from a 52 week high of 45 and will likely get a
lift from the better than expected results.
BOSTON SCIENTIFIC (BSX, 36.69)- The medical device maker beat first quarter earnings estimates by 4
cents a share, earning 25 cents a share in the quarter.
BROADCOM (BRCM, 64.38)- The company beat first quarter estimates of 14 cents a share by 5 cents
as revenues jumped 172.5%. The shares jumped 4 points in after hours trading and will
likely continue their rise in today's trading.
HMT TECHNOLOGY (HMTT, 3.13)- The disk drive component maker reported a wider than expected loss of 23
cents a share, compared to analysts' estimates of a 7 cent a share loss. Revenues
tumbled 32.8% in the quarter.
MICROSOFT (MSFT, 83.13)- The software giant earned 35 cents a share in its third quarter, beating
estimats by 3 cents. Revenues rose a better than expected 15% in the quarter.
The company remained cautious about the future, and said sales of its Windows NT server
software have slowed due to Y2K related spending. After trading down a point in
after hours trading, the shares are now up a 1/4 in Europe. Tech sector earnings
jitters will be eased by the company's statement that sales in the personal computer
industry remain strong.
QUALCOMM (QCOM, 140.63)- The wireless equipment company easily outdistanced analysts' estimates
of 59 cents a share, earning 82 cents in its second quarter as revenues rose more than 20%
to $931 million. The shares soared in after hours trading on the better than
expected results, jumping 14 points.
REAL NETWORKS (RNWK, 181.06)- The maker of Internet audio software reported a first quarter loss of 2
cents a share, beating expectations by a penny. Revenues doubled in the quarter.
The company also announced a 2 for 1 stock split. The shares will likely get
a boost from the stock split news in today's trading. |

BEST SOFTWARE (BEST,
11.56)- The software maker beat first quarter estimates by 2
cents, earning 20 cents a share in the quarter. The company cited stronger than
expected revenue growth of 46% for its better than expected results. CITRIX SYSTEMS (CTXS, 30.25)-
The software maker beat first quarter estimate by 3 cents a share as revenues grew 72% in
the quarter. The company also announced a $200 million stock buyback and the
formation of an Internet business unit. The shares should get a boost from the
better than expected results.
ENTRUST TECHNOLOGIES (ENTU, 22.19)- The Internet software maker's first quarter earnings beat estimates by 2
cents a share. Revenues rose 70% in the quarter to $16.8 million. The better
than expected results will be a positive for the stock in today's trading.
HEALTHCARE FINANCIAL PARTNERS (HCF, 28.5)- The company has agreed to a $35 a share bid from Heller Financial.
Separately, the finance company reported a better than expected 32.4% jump in first
quarter profits to 45 cents a share. The shares will likely rise in today's trading.
NETWORK ASSOCIATES (NETA, 15.25)- The company met first quarter earnings estimates of 30 cents a share,
but warned that a Y2K related slowdown will cause second quarter revenues to be below
expectations. The shares fell 1 point in after hours trading and will remain under
pressure today.
NBTY (NBTY, 4.89)- The vitamin maker warned that it will earn 9 cents a share in its second
quarter, compared to estimates of 11 cents a share. The shares are down from a 52
week high of 24.
PROGRESSIVE (PGR, 137)- The insurer earned $1.39 a share in its first quarter, missing estimates
by 9 cents a share. The company cited increased expenses for the weaker than
expected results.
STARTER CORP (STA, 1.25)- The once high flying sports apparel company filed for Chapter 11
bankruptcy protection.
TUPPERWARE (TUP, 21.75)- The kitchen products company beat first quarter estimates by 3 cents a
share, earning 31 cents in the quarter. Second quarter sales will be dragged down by
weakness in Japan and Latin America. |

SYSTEMS (CWSS, 22.63)- The company has agreed to be
acquired by MCI WorldCom for $24 a share. The wireless company emerged from Chapter
11 bankruptcy in October 1998. CHICAGO
TITLE (CTZ, 36.38)- The insurer will get a boost in
today's trading after a favorale mention in this week's Barron's.
COMPAQ COMUTER (CPQ, 23.63)- The PC maker's CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer resigned Sunday after being asked to
step down by the company's board on Saturday. The shares will likely rise on the
news in today's trading, but the company faces an increasingly price competitive market
and slowing industry sales. Earnings are due to be released on Wednesday.
COMP USA (CPU, 5.94)- The computer retailer will take a $5-$8 million restructuring charge and
reduce its workforce by 200.
CONSOLIDATED NATURAL GAS (CNG, 52.43)- Columbia Energy Group offered $70 a share for the gas company. CNG
previously agreed to be acquired by Dominion Resources for $6.3 billion, or $58 a share.
The shares will get a lift from the developing bidding war.
ELBIT VISION SYSTEMS (EVSNF, 2.43)- The company warned that it will record a first quarter loss due to lower
than expected revenues.
FLEXI INT'L SOFTWARE (FLXI, 1.68)- The software maker warned that a Y2K related slowdown will cause it to
post a wider than expected loss in its first quarter. The shares are already down
from a 52 week high of 14.5.
GRADALL INDUSTRIES (GRDL, 15.38)- The company said its first quarter earnings will beat current estimates.
Gradall expects earnings of $0.37-$0.39 in the quarter, compared to estimates of 30
cents a share. The company attributed the better than expected showing to a 30% jump
in material handler equipment revenues. The shares, trading at a forward P/E of 9,
will get a lift from the news.
OMEGA FINANCIAL (OMEF, 36.13)- The bank holding company beat first quarter estimates by 3 cents a share
as earnings grew 9% in the quarter.
REVLON (REV, 25.38)- Ron Perelman is reportedly considering selling the cosmetics company.
VALUEVISION (VVTV, 11.94)- The company received a favorable mention in this week's Barron's with an
analyst calling for the shares to hit $23 within the next twelve months. The shares
will get a boost from the news. |
