DUANE
READE INC (DRD, 28.82)- The New York drugstore operator missed
estimates by a penny as its third quarter earnings fell to 27 cents per
share from last year's 34 cents. Revenues in the quarter rose 15% to
$279.4 million. The company said it sees fourth quarter earnings of
$0.43-$0.46 per share, above analysts' estimates of 42 cents.
EASTMAN CHEMICAL CORP (EMN, 34.07)- The
chemicals maker beat estimates by seven cents as its third quarter
earnings fell 47.6% to 55 cents per share. Revenues in the quarter
slipped 1% to $1.4 billion, above analysts' estimates of $1.3
billion. The company warned that its fourth quarter earnings will
fall short of expectations due to continued global economic
weakness. The company now sees earnings below 31 cents, compared to
analysts' estimates of 37 cents.
HOTJOBS.COM INC (HOTJ, 7.06 )- The
online job recruiting web site beat estimates by a penny as it reported
third quarter earnings of two cents per share, compared to last year's
loss of 21 cents. Revenues in the quarter fell 4.6% to $27.5
million, below analysts' estimates of $28 million.
VERTICALNET INC (VERT, 1.28)-The
maker of enterprise software beat estimates by four cents as its third
quarter loss narrowed to eight cents per share from last year's loss of 35
cents. Revenues in the quarter fell 7.8% to $31.8 million, above
analysts' estimates of $29 million. The company said it sees a
fourth quarter profit of $0.01-$0.02 per share, compared to analysts'
estimates of a loss of seven cents. The company warned that it sees
fourth quarter revenues of $24-$26 million, significantly below analysts'
estimates of $33 million. The shares are up 20 cents, or 16%, in
pre-open trading on the news.

CHIRON CORP (CHIR,
47.00)- The drugmaker beat estimates by five cents as its third
quarter earnings rose 30.4% to 30 cents per share. Revenues in the
quarter rose 37% to $302 million, above analysts' estimates of $278
million. The company raised its estimates for 2002 earnings to
$1.10-$1.20 per share, compared to current analysts' estimates of $1.08.
MYLAN LABORATORIES (MYL, 33.89 )- The
drugmaker beat estimates by nine cents as its second quarter earnings
jumped 91% to 50 cents per share. Revenues in the quarter increased
38% to $286.3 million, above analysts' estimates of $252 million.
Gross margins rose to 54.5% from last year's 44.8%.
PLEXUS CORP (PLXS, 25.70)-The
provider of product development and testing services to electronics
companies missed estimates by two cents as its fourth quarter earnings
fell to 18 cents per share from last year's 33 cents. Revenues in
the quarter rose 3% to $256.8 million, but operating margins tumbled to
4.8% from last year's 9.7%. The company warned that its first
quarter results will fall short of expectations. The company now
sees earnings of $0.09-$0.12 per share and revenues of $210-$220
million. Analysts were looking for revenues of 22 cents.

BUNGE LIMITED (BG,
16.61)- The soybean processor and fertilizer maker said its third
quarter earnings jumped 235% to 76 cents per share. Revenues in the
quarter increased 16% to $3.15 billion. The company said it sees
fourth quarter earnings of $0.42-$0.48 per share.
EMERSON ELECTRIC CO (EMR, 48.89 )- The
electronics company warned that its full year results will fall short of
expectations. The company now sees earnings of $3.01 per share,
compared to analysts' estimates of $3.08. The company also said it
will take a $375 million fourth quarter charge.
USFREIGHTWAYS CORP (USFC, 31.10)-The
trucking company beat estimates by three cents as its third quarter
earnings fell to 49 cents per share from last year's 92 cents.
Revenues in the quarter declined 3.7% to $618.6 million.
