ADAPTEC (ADPT,
22.06)- The computer peripheral maker earned 36 cents a share in its fourth
quarter, beating estimates by 6 cents a share as revenues rose 12% in the quarter.
The company cited strong growth in server demand for its better than expected
showing. The shares rose 1 1/8 in after hours trading.
BRIGHTPOINT (CELL, 7.28)- The company posted a
wider than expected first quarter loss, losing 2 cents a share in the quarter, compared to
a profit of 16 cents last year. The company expects international operations to
continue to negatively impact its operations for the remainder of the year.
COMPUTER ASSOCIATES (CA, 42.38)- The
software maker expects to beat fourth quarter estimates by 2 cents a share. The
company cited strong sales of its client server software for the better than expected
results. The shares should get a lift from the news in today's trading.
DEERE (DE, 45.13)- The company warned
that second quarter revenues will fall 20% and full year revenues will sink 18%-20%.
The company cited weak agricultural prices and pricing pressures in the
construction equipment industry for the revenue shortfall. The earnings warning will
put pressure on Deere in today's trading and could put pressure on the other cyclicals.
EARTHWEB (EWBX, 51.13)- The Internet web
site operator reported a first quarter loss of 82 cents a share, compared to a loss of 27
cents last year. Analysts were looking for a loss of 93 cents a share in the
quarter. Revenues grew 1,112% to $3.7 million.
INFOSPACE (INSP, 118.63)- The internet
content provider's shares soared 10 points in after hours trading after it reported a
narrower than expected first quarter loss of 3 cents a share, beating expectations by 11
cents. The company broke even in last year's first quarter. Revenues grew 406% in
the quarter to $5.1 million.
MARKETWATCH.COM (MKTW, 72.5)-The company
posted a wider than expected loss of 52 cents a share in its first quarter, missing
estimates by 8 cents. Revenues in the quarter were $3.1 million.
WR GRACE (GRA, 15.13)- The company beat
first quarter estimates by 2 cents, as sales rose 1% in the quarter.
YPF (YPF, 35.93)- The oil company has
received a $15.9 billion bid ($44.78 a share)from Spain's Repsol for the remaining 85% of
the company

ADVANCED TECHNICAL
PRODUCTS (ATPX, 10)- The company has agreed to be acquired by an undisclosed
buyer for $14 a share in cash plus earnings based inentives. Look for the stock to
close the gap between yesterday's close and the purchase price in today's trading.
AMAZON.COM (AMZN, 193.5)- The 4th largest retailer
(ranked by market capitalization) reported a first quarter loss of 39 cents a share,
compared to a loss of 7 cents last year. Factoring out M&A related costs, the
bookseller lost 23 cents a share, beating estimates of a 29 cents a share loss.
Revenues grew to $293.6 million, beating expectations of $260 million. In what could
amount to a sea change of opinion in how investors choose to analyze Internet stock
earnings, rather than focusing on the beating of expectations the focus in after hours
trading is on the company's announcement that the pace of revenue growth will slow and
costs will continue to mount. The shares are down over 10% in European trading.
CALLAWAY GOLF (ELY, 14.94)- The golf club
maker beat first quarter expectations by 6 cents a share, earning 18 cents. Sales
rose 5% to $185.7 million in the quarter, while the operating margin rose to 15.8%
compared to 12.8%. The company remains cautious on the sales outlook for the full
year. The shares, which have been strong of late, should get a boost from the better
than expected results.
COMFORCE (CFS, 3.5)- The company warned
that it will lose 7 to 9 cents a share in its first quarter, compared to estimates of a 2
cents a share profit. The company cited a decline in demand from Boeing, its largest
client, for the shortfall.
ETHAN ALLEN INTERIORS (ETH, 51.94)- The
furniture company announced a 3 for 2 stock split and a 50% dividend boost.
KANSAS CITY SOUTHERN (KSU, 61.43)- The
company topped first quarter estimates by 3 cents, earning 60 cents a share in its first
quarter, an increase of 48%. Revenues jumped 30% in the quarter, while assets under
managment grew 25%.
MEDIAONE GROUP (UMG, 80.06)- The take
over target beat first quarter expectations of a 34 cents a share loss, losing 21 cents a
share in the quarter. Separately, America Online reportedly is considering making a
joint bid with Comcast for the company.
MIDAMERICAN ENERGY (MEC, 31.19)- The
utility reported a 33% rise in first quarter revenues and a 44% jump in earnings.
The company earned 50 cents a share, beating expectations of 41 cents.
READERS DIGEST (RDA, 32.5)- The publisher
beat third quarter estimates by 6 cents a share, earning 23 cents. The company
expects profits to show a further improvement in the fourth quarter. The shares
should get a lift from the news.
SCHULER HOMES (SHLR, 7.31)- The company
earned 24 cents a share in its first quarter, beating estimates of 15 cents a share.
Revenues rose 72.7% and backlog jumped 62.6% in the quarter.
SCIENTIFIC ATLANTA (SFA, 28.5)- The cable
TV equipment maker beat third quarter estimates by 6 cents, earning 25 cents a share in
the quarter as revenues rose 11%.

AMERICA ONLINE
(AOL, 153)- The Internet company earned 11 cents a share in its third quarter,
beating estimates by 2 cents. Revenues rose to $1.3 billion in the quarter. Revenue
from advertising and e-commerce jumped 119% to $210 million. The stock fell 2 in
after hours trading.
APRIA
HEALTHCARE (AHG, 15.25)- The company said it will earn 30 cents a share in its
first quarter compared to current analysts' estimates of 22 cents. The shares closed
near their 52 week high of 15 1/2 yesterday and should get a boost from the news in
today's trading.
BAAN NV (BAANF, 8.63)- Shares of the
enterprise resource planning software maker rose 8% in European trading after the company
reported a loss of $19.1 million in its first quarter, compared to analysts' estimates of
a $26 million loss. Revenues fell 2% to $175.8 million. The company expects
industry conditions to remain difficult through the end of the year. Baan also
announced that it will provide Dutch telco giant Royal KPN with software solutions.
The shares of Baan, along with the other E.R.P. software makers represent good long term
value at current levels.
BMC SOFTWARE (BMCS, 41.75)- The software
maker reported fourth quarter earnings of 47 cents a share, compared to estimates of 45
cents.
CHRONIMED (CHMD, 5.63)- The medical
company said it will explore strategic alternatives to increase shareholder value.
The company also announced third quarter earnings of 4 cents a share, one cent ahead of
expectations. Revenues jumped to $51.7 million from last year's $33.7 million.
The shares, trading near their 52 week low of 4 3/4, should get a boost in today's trading
from the news.
CULLEN FROST BANKERS (CFR, 52.43)- The
banking grup announced a 2 for 1 stock split, a $100 million stock buyback, and a 5 cent
increase in its quarterly dividend to $0.35.
INTERFACE (IFSIA, 10.19)- The company
missed first quarter earnings estimates by 5 cents a share, earning 11 cents in the
quarter. The company warned that weak carpet and fabric sales will cause full year
earnings to come in at $0.65-$0.75 a share, compared to current estimates of $1.00.
The news will put added pressure on the shares, which are down from a 52 week high of 21
3/8, in today's trading.
MINDSPRING ENTERPRISES (MSPG, 116.31)-
The Internet company beat first quarter estimates by 3 cents a share, earning 16
cents a share in the quarter. Revenues rose to $61.6 million in the quarter from
$39.5 million last year. The shares should get a boost from the better than expected
results.
PCORDER.COM (PCOR, 74)- The e-commerce
solutions provider reported a narrower than expected loss of 20 cents a share.
Revenues rose 70% to $7.7 million in the quarter.
SDL INC (SDLI, 104.5)- The fiber optics
maker beat first quarter estimates by 8 cents a share, earning 33 cents in the quarter.
Revenues rose 41 percent to $35.7 million.

AFLAC (AFL, 51.31)- The company will join the S&P 500 after
Friday's close.
AIRBORNE FREIGHT
(ABF, 35.68)- The freight handler reported a 17% drop in first quarter earnings
to 51 cents a share, 7 cents below analysts' estimates of 58 cents a share. The
company blamed the worse than expected results on a low growth rate in domestic shipments
and severe weather. The shares could come under pressure in today's trading.
AMAZON.COM (AMZN, 207.19)- The Internet
based company announced that it is buying 3 Internet companies (Accept.com, Alexa
Internet, and Exhange.com) for $645 million.
CHEAP TICKETS (CTIX, 41.75)- The company
reported first quarter earnings of 5 cents a share, beating expectations of a breakeven
quarter. Revenues rose 87% in the quarter. The shares gained 1 1/4 in after
hours trading on the news.
CMS ENERGY (CMS, 41.25)- The company will
join the S&P 500 on Friday.
EBAY (EBAY, 209)- The stock gained 4 1/2
in after hours trading after the online auctioneer reported earnings of 5 cents a share,
beating expectations by 2 cents. Revenues of the Internet giant surged to $34
million in the quarter. Look for the Internet stocks to rally on the better than
expected results.
HARTFORD FINANCIAL SERVICES (HIG, 59)-
The insurer beat estimates by 4 cents in its first quarter, earning 95 cents a share.
KN ENERGY (KNE, 21.94)- The gas company
warned that first quarter earnings will come in considerably below forecasts. The
company expects 13 cents a share, analysts were looking for 24 cents. The company
blamed warmer than normal weather and margin pressures for the expected earnings
shortfall.
READ RITE (RDRT, 6)- The disk drive
component maker posted a much wider than expected second quarter loss of 39 cents a share.
Revenues rose to $206 million from $187 million in the prior year's quarter. The
company also said it expects industry conditions to remain weak and warned that it will
report a third quarter loss. Read Rite plans to cut 2500 jobs as it attempts to
adjust to slowing conditions.
UNICAPITAL (UCP, 5.5)- The company warned
that it will report a first quarter loss, compared to current forecasts for a 21 cents a
share profit. The shares have fallen from a 52 week high of 19.63 and will likely
remain under pressure following this news.

(ABCL, 19.84)- The bank holding company beat first quarter estimates by 3 cents.
The company earned 39 cents a share, compared to $0.41 last year. Net
interest income declined by 1.4%.
BROADCOM
(BRCM, 68.75)- The company will buy chip maker Epigram for 4.6 million shares of
Broadcom stock in a $316 million deal.
FIRSTFED AMERICA BANCORP (FAB, 13)- The
banking company earned 32 cents a share, beating analysts' fourth quarter estimates by 2
cents. Earnings rose 78% in the quarter, and total assets increased 8.7% to $1.39
billion.
FUNDTECH (FNDTF, 36.75)- The company beat
estimates by 2 cents a share, earning 16 cents in its first quarter. Revenues jumped
161% in the quarter, and software license fees rose 128%. Maintenance and service
revenue increased 310% to $2.8 million in the quarter.
JABIL CIRCUIT (JBL, 41.56)- The company
will join the S&P MidCap 400 after today's close.
UNISOURCE ENERGY (UNS, 11)- The electric
company reported a wider than expected first quarter loss of 17 cents a share.
